Hensley Playbook™ was founded by Dr. Jennifer Hensley and Simone Olson, who together have spent decades supporting children, families, and schools. Your child’s evaluation is always conducted by a licensed clinician who works directly with autism every day.

Dr. Jennifer L. Hensley

Co-Founder & CEO, Primary Care Pediatric Nurse Practitioner

Dr. Jennifer Hensley is a Doctor of Nursing Practice and Primary Care Pediatric Nurse Practitioner who holds dual board certifications from the Pediatric Nursing Certification Board in primary care pediatrics (CPNP-PC) and pediatric mental health specialist (PMHS). With more than 24 years of experience, including 12 years focused on developmental pediatrics, she has supported over 24,000 children with autism and developmental concerns. She leads Hensley Playbook™ as a focused diagnostic and guidance practice, has led research on autism care for military families, served as faculty at the Uniformed Services University, and contributed as a chapter author to pediatric publications. Families describe her as a generational clinician whose expertise is matched by her compassion. A proud mom of three from a military family, her work is guided by her faith and a deep commitment to service.

Simone Olson recently retired from the U.S. Department of Education, where she spent many years in program and stakeholder management, including leading a national recognition program and supporting access to vital educational resources. At Hensley Playbook™ she serves as Chief Operating Officer, overseeing the operations that make every step of the evaluation organized, structured, and easy for parents to follow. As the Hensley Playbook™ Navigator, she provides non-medical guidance and support for families, working alongside her lifelong friend, Dr. Jennifer Hensley.

Every evaluation is held over secure, private video, so your child stays in the place they feel most comfortable. We currently work with families in Florida and Virginia.

The Autism Playbook™ is a practical, parent-friendly guide created by Dr. Jennifer Hensley to help families better understand autism and recognize the strengths that often go unseen. It reframes the journey with hope and clarity, reminding parents that with the right support, autistic children can thrive and shine in their own unique ways.

Based on real-world lessons, this book helps parents feel prepared and empowered to build the best support team possible for their child. It offers encouragement, direction, and a steady message families need to hear: you can do this, and you are not alone.

Is virtual really effective?

Yes. Children often feel safest and behave most naturally in their own home. In the virtual environment there are no bright lights, no vital signs, and no unfamiliar faces, so our clinicians can observe a child without the stress, anxiety, or artificial behaviors often triggered by an unfamiliar clinical setting.

What ages do you evaluate?

We provide comprehensive autism evaluations for children and teens from 12 months to 17 years old. Young adults ages 18 to 21 are considered on a case-by-case basis.

How long does the process take?

Developmental testing and intake forms are completed by the guardian and typically take two to three hours to fill out. The virtual clinical evaluation itself takes about two hours. From there, we can complete the full evaluation within 72 hours.

Do you accept insurance?

We are a self-pay clinic, which allows us to avoid insurance delays and provide faster, more personalized support. We provide a Superbill that you can submit to your insurance for potential out-of-network reimbursement.

Do you serve families outside Florida and Virginia?

Evaluations are currently offered in Florida and Virginia, and we plan to expand to additional states in 2027. What if my child needs in-person support?

Virtual evaluations are an excellent fit for many children. However, if during the virtual process we feel your child requires an in-person assessment for the most accurate evaluation, we will be honest with you and assist with recommendations for local specialists.

How fast can I get answers?

Once paperwork is complete and your evaluation is scheduled, we can complete the full evaluation within 72 hours. Our primary goal is to get you answers and clarity as quickly as possible so you can begin supporting your child.

Do you offer genetic testing?

When the clinical evaluation warrants it, we can order genetic testing. Evidence-based practice recommends genetic testing for someone diagnosed with autism, and we will discuss whether it is appropriate for your child.

What happens after the diagnosis?

We don’t just provide a diagnosis and leave you to figure it out alone. We care for children at every level of autism, Levels 1, 2, and 3, and we develop a treatment plan for 100% of the children we see. You will receive a clear, family-friendly treatment plan with actionable recommendations for therapies, school accommodations, and daily life support.
